I recently got a Chromebook 100e gen 4 that has a Mediatek kompanio 520 processor. I checked the compatibility chart and the laptop is there but I believe it’s the intel celeron version. I heard about fedora working on the new M chips in MacBooks so I was curious if I could get fedora or preferably mint working on this.
I have an Asus Chromebook detachable cm3001, and it’s got the same Mediatek chip. I dont’t think they support it yet. The ARM architecture is still not very support, and most Liunx distros do support this chip, but its very complex road, you have to find a way to replace the ChromeOS bootloader, enable developer mode and you have to turn off Write Protection, then find an os that supports the Mediatek chip. Though this chip was many designed for ChromeOS, there are a few. Debian and Ubuntu supports this chip, along side Fedora and Mangaro. but Fedora is mostly experimental and Mangaro doesn’t support it with its ARM images. Most of the issues I’ve read about are about the bootloader, you need to find a Linux kernal that supports the chips Depthcharge bootloader. There are projects for that, buts to would take a lot of testing and trouble shooting to get this working and you run the risk of bricking the device.
