Trouble Flashing MrChromebox firmware. No curl command Debian 12

System Details

  • Device: Asus C204EE “APEL” Octopus
  • OS: Current Chrome 106. Replacing with Linux
  • Firmware Type: Stock, flashing to full ROM

Summary of the Issue

Booting an old enrolled Asus that I purchased from USB using Shimboot. Booting into a debian 12 distro from USB, cant run Mr Chromebox Firmware Utility Script bercause debian 12 on the Dhimboot disk has no curl command. Tried downloading curl command and adding it, but its not getting all the necessary data. Looked around for solutions and found a bug that required me to clear files in a certain directory, but because I;m operating from USB in Shimboot, I cant modify any of the folders. I could build a Shim for the Octopus board with Ubuntu, but I’m not sure how to do it, and cant find much info on it.

Is there another way to get around this?

I can’t get to developer mode because its enrolled.

Booting with Shimboot from USB

Want to replace Chrome with Linux

Cant start Mr CHromebox Firmware Utility Script because no curl command in debian 12

Tried to add curl command but getting an incomplete error.

This is not my first chromebook to replace the US and firmware.

I need to start the Firmware Utility Script

what does that mean? WHAT error?

I don’t know any Debian distro where sudo apt update && sudo apt install curl doesn’t work

Thanks for the response. I was able to fix the issue tonight and successfully started your firmware script. Just like to say that you have done an extraordinary job helping a lot of people find use in these old Chromebooks. I’ve flashed your firmware on at least a half dozen machines, no two alike, and found all the support and information right here and on Mr Chromebox tech. Thank you for all yoir hard work and support.

After running your utility script, I discovered that all the wp are still intact. I don’t have the original power supply for this one so I’m using just a USB brick and charger cord for ac power. This is not enough to power the machine with the battery unplugged. I have an atx power supply that I use for bench testing and charging. Can I wire a USB c plug into one of the twelve volt posts to supply power while i disconnect the battery and disable wp? Or does it have to be a variable voltage supply? Or do I need to wait until the asus power supply i ordered arrives in a couple days?

Thanks again for your support.

it just needs to be a USB-PD charger capable of 45W+.

A 12v PSU will not work, and almost certainly damage the device
