To unable to power on Asus Chromebox 3 (CN65)

System Details

  • Device: TEEMO
  • OS: Linux
  • Firmware Type: UEFI Full ROM
  • Firmware Version: Latest as of 1st March
  • Internal storage type: SATA, NVMe

Summary of the Issue

I flashed the full ROM firmware to my CN65. I’m aware of the issues surrounding using USB city to power. Chromebox is flashed with the new firmware, but I found a workaround by setting the power restore settings to power on. This seems to force the PC to power on.

I was using a 100W Ugreen charger for this and it works well. I then tried using a 65 watt one but that doesn’t work. I then tried going back to the barrel. Jack PSU however, this is causing some new issues.

I plug it in and the power light flashes red. Pressing the button also makes it flash red. I tried plugging the cable in whilst holding down the refresh button but that didn’t work.

I tried removing the RAM, SSD, Wi-Fi card and the CMOS battery but none of this worked.

If I leave it plugged in for a while after about 10 minutes I can press the button and it does boot

Sometimes pressing the power button blinks the red light. The fan spins to maximum for a few seconds and then turns off

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Plug the barrel jack connector in

  2. Observe power light flash red once

  3. Press the power button

  4. Observe the power light flash red again

Expected Behavior

The system should have booted

Hi there!

Im commonly known as ATech, and im not a professional.

What I think you are experiencing is a PSU failure! an easy way to fix this is to:

  1. Unplug the chromebook from wall outlet.
  2. Open up the chromebook.
  3. Unplug the battery.
  4. Press the Power button.
  5. Plug the battery in.
  6. (Not entirely recommended) Before closing up, plug the chromebook into a wall outlet, and press the power button, if that works, proceed to 7.
  7. Close up the chromebook.
  8. Done!

If it still doesnt start up, then im sorry.

OP has a Chromebox, not book. there is no internal battery
