Just thought I’d drop in to report this. Thanks to the community and mrchromebox!
Everything worked out of the box except for audio, which just took a tiny bit of massaging and manually setting volume limits to avoid speaker damage.
Linux Mint 22 is ubuntu based, however it doesn’t pack in the Snap Store and it has an updated kernel. Linux kernel 6.8. It’s based on Ubuntu 24.04 and is a monolithic kernel with GNU userland.
I did UEIF full install - linux mint install via booting via flash-drive.
Touchpad, gestures, touchscreen, pressure sensitive stylus, wifi, Bluetooth, etc. all just work!
Also, other than having an eMMC drive - I 10/10 recommend this device. Can be found cheap with 8th gen i5, 8gb ram, 128gb eMMC. Very nice 3:2 screen, keyboard & trackpad are nice enough, hinge is very nice.
Also dropped a 512gb micro-sd card into the slot for slower file-storage, considering getting a SAMSUNG FIT Plus 3.1 256gb to leave permanently in the usb-a slot. (I believe that is about as-fast as the eMMC).
Considering I got this under $100 renewed, and everything works, I’m impressed. Mostly doing AWS cloud development with jetbrains rider and vs code, running gimp and web browser etc.
This is good to hear as I am typing this from exactly the same Chromebook model as you have and keen to go down the same route. I have already installed Linux Mint on my old Macbook Pro (Mid 2012). Wish me luck and I’m all ears if you have any other relevant tips. Cheers
Well, for anyone that’s interested I managed to remove ChromeOS from my Acer Spin 13 (CP713-1WN) | AKALI360 Chromebook and got Linux Mint 22 installed in it’s place. Most things are working fine although I do have a list of teething problems (below) that I’d like to get sorted if possible. Will search this forum and elsewhere for possible solutions but if anyone has any ideas that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Outstanding issues:
Sound does not appear to be working at all.
screen brightness button do not work (in fact all the Chromebook function buttons probably need to be remapped / enabled somehow).
Battery function / life has been a bit erratic. Wondering whether this is because I had to disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard to remove write protection during the install? Currently doing a few cycles of giving the battery a full charge then draining it down completely in the hope that this may stabilise / re-calibrate the battery.
Also noticed that the fan seems to go into overdrive and stay on at full speed when the laptop lid is shut (suspend / hibernate mode).
