Recovery usb not detected on wiped device

System Details

  • Device: SARIEN

  • OS: None (internal storage wiped)

  • Firmware Type: Stock

  • Firmware Version: Google_Sarien.12200.25.0

  • Internal storage type: NVME

Summary of the Issue Trying to use a USB recovery drive to install ChromeOS on a wiped SARIEN device, but the recovery screen isn’t detecting the USB drive.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Boot to recovery screen (internal storage is wiped)

  2. Previously had RW_LEGACY installed via MrChromebox script, which somehow got broken

  3. Wait for “remove all connected devices” prompt

  4. Plug in USB flashed with official sarien recovery image via dd

Expected Behavior Recovery screen should detect the USB and begin the installation automatically.

Additional Info Recovery image verified — zip sha1 matches recovery.json (e747d753ff94ae7257ed3ee3c9462d77878ac32f), filesize matches exactly (4983173632 bytes). Tried multiple USB ports and plugging in before/after power on. Device was given to a friend, he shut it off and it wouldn’t boot anymore after that. Suspect this is what broke RW_LEGACY and left the internal storage in its current state.

recovery not detecting your USB means you just need to use another USB stick or port, there’s no magic, doesn’t matter how the recovery image is written to USB. This is a hardware handshaking issue in Google’s firmware.
