Sincere apologies for not doing more research, I hope you can help me anyways. I purged Google from my life a few years ago. Now kid’s school is forcing Google Classrooms and Chromebooks down our throats. I now need something that approximates Chromebook for kid’s homework. I don’t want to give them general PC, as they are too young to handle something like that without direct supervision.
I looked at ChromiumOS, but these folks lost their collective minds, I simply do not have time to compile my own build. It looks like FydeOS is the way to go, I am not averse to even pay for patching. They seems to support “everything”, but that cannot possibly be true.
So, I am looking to buy a new device and want to de-Google it as much as possible.
Q1: Is FydeOS with subscription the way to go? I also considered Apple Neo, but it is more than I want to spend on kid’s device.
Q2: Looking at MrChromebox.tech it all appears to be about board, but I can’t easily find this info prior to buying. Can someone recommend what to buy to have a hassle free FydeOS install?
Q3: I need to lockdown the resulting device to be restricted to school activities only, or kids going to browse YT all day on it. I can probably switch it to whitelist-only on PiHole, but that is more work than I want to do. Also, I don’t control WiFi at school. Is there an easy way to accomplish this on the device? I would like to avoid fiddling with hosts if possible, don’t even know if there is provision for root access on these devices.
