Many issues with BARLA

System Details

  • Device: HP Chromebook 11A G6 (G8?) EE, BARLA/grunt board
  • OS: ChromeOS
  • Firmware Type: Stock as far as I know
  • Firmware Version: N/A
  • Internal storage type: eMMC

Summary of the Issue

I got this Chromebook for free because it would not boot nor charge. After solving the hardware issues, it shows signs of life in that you can get to recovery and install the stock image from an SD card, but trying to boot just oscillates between a black and blank screen before eventually saying ChromeOS is missing or damaged. You can recover it as many times as you like, it does not change.

Whoever had it last enabled developer mode, so I was able to boot into shimboot. The Debian environment it provides is unusable, but the bootloader is interesting because you can chainload the A and B system partitions. Picking A will boot ChromeOS and give you the OOBE, but WiFi drivers are broken since they are loaded from Debian so that’s as far as you get. A USB ethernet or WiFi dongle does not work. Picking B just brings you to an infinitely spinning repair screen.

I do want to put MrChromebox’s UEFI firmware on this once I get it to boot right, so I should also note that his website says you have to disconnect the battery to disable WP. Even with a 65W charger, mine will not boot without the battery attached.

I apologize if this is the wrong way or wrong place to ask for help on this, I just don’t know where else to go. Any help is greatly appreciated
