This shows up when I boot Linux Mint, HP Chromebook 11 G4, what can I do?
Main Issue: No Audio
Use full rom
is this an RW_Legacy Issue?
potentially, but also that we don’t support RWL on EOL devices
Oh, but apart from going UEFI, is there any reason this could happen/solution?
you’ve provided no info so there is nothing for us to diagnose. But I think you will find it challenging to get someone to try and debug any issue when using RWL on an EOL device.
KIP, HP Chromebook 11 G4 (in the titile), Linux Mint XFCE (latest ver). Though why will it be difficult to debug issues with RWL, if i may ask
that info is completely insufficient diagnostically. The chrultrabook docs link to a script that collects the necessary info to diagnose audio issues.
RWL firmware is just the stock firmware + a legacy boot (or UEFI) bootloader. Google does a lot of non-compliant things in the stock firmware (esp on older devices). We’re not going to troubleshoot and work around those issues when 1) they don’t exist in the UEFI Full ROM firmware, and 2) your device is (way, way, way) EOL so there’s zero reason to be running the stock firmware.
The audio drivers on these old devices check if the dmi system vendor is google to apply some quirks. dmesg clearly says the vendor is unset, which is a stock firmware bug. Using full rom will fix this issue.
Oh ok, do i send the diagnostic file then?
we’re not going to look at diagnostic data from an RWL booted OS on an EOL device, period. We already know it’s fucked.
oh ok. though i do want to ask, how come my audio works on GalliumOS if the vendor is unset?
because GalliumOS has a lot of hacks to work around issues in the stock firmware. It’s also dead 6+ years now.
Ah, is there any alternative distro/os like Gallium then? If not, can I use the GalliumOS kernel on LinuxMint & will it work / is there any major cons in doing so?
We will not help you with stock firmware. period.
my bad & sorry, just asking if this could hypothetically work
hypothetically, yes. but not worth it.
yeah, running a 6+ year old kernel is insane
oh my bad, well thanks for advice then. One last thing though, could like copying the audio related stuff of the gallium kernel/gtihub // galliumos baytrail github do anything?
only if you want to build and maintain your own kernel fork, and if you’re capable of translating kernel patches from kernel 4.x to 6.x
at this point, you’ve already spent more time trying to figure out how to work around the problem then it would take to flash the firmware and reinstall / have a working setup. You want to spend a few days (conservatively) trying to figure out the kernel part?
