Kali linux usb not seen in chromebox menu

i have a bootable USB with kali linux but i wont show up in the chromebox boot menu, my USB with lubuntu and chromeos both show up and it was a three pack of USBs so it shouldn’t be the USB, any ideas what it might be, (used rufus and etcher, neither worked) it is only 9mb on the disk which makes mw wonder if the writing is being dumb
running on a HP Chromebook - 14a-na0010ca (gemini lake)
