Installing system on SD card

My chromebook (acer spin 512) has only 32Gb and no NVME / SATA slot so i thought about buying an SD card and installing linux on it
Is it possible? If yes are there any drawbacks?

too slow to be usable, and most devices don’t boot from SD reliably

Install linux in internal emmc and points out home folder to external micro sd.

I would be careful with combining internal/sdcard by mounting important folders from sdcard. (Like all of /home.)

I had an sdcard fail a few years ago and my system wouldn’t boot because of how things were mounted across internal/sdcard (in addition to losing the data.)

Maybe mount /home/[user]/Downloads and/or anything you can afford to lose that may require significant space, that are not required for booting, from sdcard. /tmp if you’re not using ram for tmp. But slowness may still be an issue.
