Many thanks to this excellent resource I have managed to get Linux Mint up and running on my Chromebook. However there is something which is bugging me and that is that sound is not working at all. I have done lots of reading on this site and elsewhere and tried a few things however the problem persists.
Board Name = AKALI360
Device Name = Acer Chromebook Spin 13 (CP713-1WN)
Disabled firmware write protection (disconnect battery method)
Flashed MrChromebox’s UEFI Full ROM firmware
Installed Linux Mint 22.1 Xia from an .iso on a USB drive via Ventoy.
I followed the “Fixing Audio” steps here, running WeirdTreeThing’s script
Ah, that’s a shame. I have Mint running on my old MacBook Pro, I’ve got used to it and enjoy using it. Would have been good to have some continuity but I’m definitely not against trying other distros and thankful for your advice. Saves me bashing my head off the problem even more.
So I have this list below of other potential options from another post on this site. Just wonder whether you think any of these would be more hopeful for me to get sound working with Linux on this chromebook?
Arch Linux or EndeavourOS
Fedora or Ultramarine Linux
openSUSE Tumbleweed
Pop!_OS
Alternatively if you could recommend any others that would be great.
For anyone reading this. Just an update to say that I’m still on the same Chromebook. I switched from Linux Mint to Pop!_OS a while back but still encountered the same issue - no sound. However, recently (and out of the blue) sound just starting working for me. Wish I knew why, can only assume that it’s to do with a system update that I ran.
I just installed the newest version of Linux Mint 22 Zara and I’m having audio issues. At first there was no sound at all. I worked through it with ChatGPT and somehow got it working temporarily. Everything seemed fine.
Then I restarted my Chromebook and the sound completely disappeared again. Now it’s back to no audio output.
Has anyone else run into this on Mint 22 Zara? Especially on a Chromebook setup? Did you find a permanent fix that survives a reboot?
Would really appreciate any help because this is driving me crazy.
