HP Chromebook x360 11 G1 EE SNAPPY stuck in recovery mode

Mentioned device gets only in recovery mode and displays message:
”Chrome OS is missing or damaged.
Please remove all connected devices and start recovery”

It is listed at HP Chromebook x360 11 G1 EE as CR50 (SuzyQ, battery)

Ctrd+D does not work. Nothing happens. No login prompt.
Tried Ctrl-T, Ctrl-Alt-Arrow (F2) … Nothing.
I got it second hand so I am not sure is it “enrolled”. I don’t see any other messages.

I have disconnected the battery, but behavior is the same. Do I need SuzyQ cable?

I want UEFI boot and Linux only.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

BTW, it used to boot into this under battery but it sat for a long time and did not react to any key combination even after full night on a charger so I decided to remove the battery.

Looking at this post Hp Chromebook x360 won’t go into recovery mode (Dragonair) - #8 by MrChromebox
maybe my steps are not entirely correct.

@MrChromebox Any suggestion? What else could I try?

press tab and see if it gives you a recovery reason.

Booting to recovery mode requires a working battery connected.

when you see that msg, you need to explicitly boot recovery mode (ESC+Refresh+power) and use a recovery USB when prompted.

Thanks for the TAB suggestion.

I have to reconnect the battery and check does it work. Maybe I’ll need a new one.
Whatever I tried, i was not able to turn it on.

I have plugged the battery back.

When I connect the charger, LED turns on for 10-11 sec, turns off for 2-3 and then repeats the cycle.

Does that tell us anything about the state of a battery?

OMG! This worked. I get prompted for recovery USB.
It “finished” and said it will start automatically after USB removal but I only have black screen.

I can reboot to recovery mode every time.

Not able to boot normally.
I am back to 10-11 to 1-2 charging cycle.

ChatGPT thinks I need a new battery. :frowning:
Your LED behavior:

Amber ON for 11–12 seconds → OFF for 2–3 seconds → repeats

This pattern means:
The charger IS working,
the mainboard IS accepting power,
but the battery is NOT taking or holding charge.

This pattern is a classic sign of deep-discharged or failing battery on Chromebooks (including SNAPPY).

I’d suggest getting a recovery image for your board, flashing it onto a USB or SD Card, and then use that USB to proceed with recovery, but after looking through the history of this topic, I am unsure if that would help.

Thanks! I already did that. I am waiting for the new battery. We’ll see how it goes.

New battery in. ChromeOS booted, even managed to update.
Charging normally.
I’ll try to put Linux later, but I suppose it should be all well now.
