I’m planning on replacing ChromeOS with Debian 12 Bookworm for more customization, performance (maybe?), and software. I haven’t been able to make any conclusions based on my research so far but I heard of something related to flashing new firmware. I have developer mode enabled and know how to boot from a USB drive/MicroSD but I haven’t done much more than that. My two big questions are:
- Can I just install Debian through the regular installer image without firmware shenanigans and higher risks of bricking, and
- Is there a backup image of some sort in case I want to revert back to ChromeOS?
On a side note, the diagnostics tool says my Chromebook is a HP Chromebook 14a (codename blooglet) but both the UEFI/BIOS and the system info shown from a live Debian USB say it’s a HP Chromebook x360 12b (codename bloog). Whether that means anything significant, I’m not entirely sure.
