System Details
- Device: crota360
- OS: Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 (24H2, 26100)
- Firmware Type: UEFI Full ROM
- Firmware Version: MrChromebox-2603.0 03/29/2026
- Internal storage type: NVMe
Summary of the Issue
On a Brya, Crota360; Windows 11 does not use fast startup on boot despite shutting down as if it had performed the usual steps to do so before power off. This issue started occurring after installing firmware to the latest 2603.0 mrchromebox release. It did not occur on 2512.2 (previous) or lower.
Steps to Reproduce
-
Enable Fast Startup
-
Power off device normally by going to Start > Power > Shutdown
-
Wait until system is fully off
-
Attempt to start system
Expected Behavior
Windows 11 should have successfully started up using the cached kernel and state from hyberfil.sys, not perform a cold boot.
I have repeatedly attempted to EC reset and perform a hybrid shutdown through command prompt. I have also tried to use DISM/SFC and toggle hibernation through powercfg. Hibernation type is confirmed to be set as Reduced.
I have found error “0x0C000007B” in Windows Event Viewer. I will be reinstalling windows to see if this fixes the issue.
Fast Startup is not supported, you should disable it
Huh? It used to work flawlessly before. Did something change as of recent?
it’s never been supported, it’s never worked to my knowledge
Reinstalled windows while on mrchromebox FW 2603.1, still didn’t work. Downgraded to 2512.2 and fast startup worked. Did something in the firmware change at all that affected fast startup? iirc it’s always worked for me up until the 2603.0 update and all subsequent versions.
I’ll add some data points:
I had hibernation working somewhat reliably in my Redrix (same brya family as crota360) in 2512. By “somewhat reliably” I mean “did wake from disk correctly at all times but the first one (it lost state once after an EC reset, but the next hibernations woke up correctly afterwards)”. However, power usage was somehow no better than S3, IIRC. This is probably related: Lenovo Ideapad flex 5i(TAEKO) Abnormal battery drain when the device is powered off. · Issue #898 · MrChromebox/firmware · GitHub (also brya).
I decided to keep it completely disabled once I found S4 was not officially supported anyway.
Also, Pantheon (nami) seemed to hibernate fine in 24.05 when I tested it long ago, despite, again, officially unsupported. Didn’t test power usage in this one though, just ability to wake up correctly.
I had thought hibernation and fast startup were actually supported and assumed this for a while since I first installed the full rom UEFI firmware. Fast Startup worked somewhat flawlessly from what I could tell on 2512.x and a few versions below, having no excessive battery drain of the sort. The entire time I had used fast startup up until this point, it has seemingly never failed me.
I have even inspected event viewer and tested fast startup using the Windows Assessment & Deployment KIt (ADK), getting no errors. Only recently has 2603.x started causing issues with Fast Startup and Windows would seem to consistently fail to use both fast startup and hibernation. This was represented by an influx of events in event viewer regarding the failure of fast startup despite Windows successfully saving its state to “hyberfil.sys”.
Something in the latest firmware update has caused Windows to be unable to boot using fast startup or hibernation as it correctly worked in the previous version (2512.x)
