Error and difficulty facing

Hello everyone,

I recently converted my Asus Chromebox 4 to Windows 10 using the jumping method. While the installation was successful, I’m facing several issues that I hope someone can help me resolve. Here’s a breakdown of the problems:

  1. Power Button Issue:
Whenever I connect my Chromebox to power, the power button doesn’t work as expected. The device starts automatically without me pressing the button, and to get it to work properly, I need to perform a force shutdown by holding the power button. Only after this, the power button functions normally to start the system again. I’m unsure if this is a BIOS/firmware issue or a compatibility problem with Windows.

  2. Slow Boot Time:
Once I turn it on, the Chromebox takes anywhere between 2 to 4 minutes to boot into Windows 10. This feels unusually long for such a system. I’ve tried disabling unnecessary startup programs and checked the fast startup option in the power settings, but the issue persists. Is there any way to optimize the boot time for Windows on this hardware?

  3. Sound Driver Missing:
My biggest issue is that the sound driver doesn’t seem to work at all. The device shows a red cross on the sound icon, indicating no sound output. I’ve tried downloading drivers from the support page, but none of them include sound drivers for Windows. I’ve heard about the Coolstar audio driver, but unfortunately, it’s a paid solution and I’m unable to afford it. I come from a not-so-rich background and have spent all my savings on this system. I’ve also attempted to install other audio drivers (Realtek, Intel HD Audio), but nothing seems to work.

I would really appreciate any advice or free solutions you might have to fix these issues. Has anyone successfully managed to get sound working on an Asus Chromebox 4 running Windows 10? Any tips on improving boot time and fixing the power button would also be incredibly helpful!

Thank you in advance for your time and support.

Best regards,
Muhammad Amaz

The same thing happens on my chromebox that runs linux, so its not a windows thing

That is odd, I wouldnt have an answer to this one. Which windows build are you running?

If stock realtek/intel drivers worked, I dont think it would have made sense for coolstar to write an entirely different driver for windows on chromebooks, and then make them paid

Yeah but i had an Cn60 before on that thing the start button was working perfectly fine, i thought that i had broken the button while opening it for the jumper process.

I was using the window 10 then i even switched to Ubuntu but nothing seems to works i think it is a problem with the firmware or my device.

Yeah i accept the fact that it woud have taken a effort to find the right driver and maybe making changes to the driver and making it work but she should have atleast provided some support or guidance to install an audio driver on chromebox for people like me who even can afford of having a international debit card to make payments on apps lik patreon, because in our country there is a good amount in bank and a fees required to even get an international debit card, developers say that you should support him for her efforts, 10$ is just a little price for her efforts, i understand but people like us need support we can’t support when it comes to financial needs or money,
i am now installing windows 11 today after making my chromebox sit on my table like a mess for 2 weeks because I didn’t had much time, lets see if i am able to find some solutions.

She completely wrote the driver for audio on chrome devices - from nothing but the comparable linux code, which takes time and skill

Sadly thats not the case, though I do understand why theyre paid. Dedicating several years of your life to running windows on chrome devices (as she also wrote several other drivers, that are free) youd expect something out of it

Yah i accept the fact that she did so much contribution on this project, i didn’t meant to say anything bad about her work obv it’s her content and it’s her right to monetize it but i was much disheartened that i ws not able to buy those drivers because of the payment method were not compatible with my country and i also didn’t had much saved up. But today i gave my time and alhamdulillah i was able to make things work now the audio driver atleast works, i used snappy driver to install it then a little bit of more effort made it work fine.

you don’t need any paid drivers for the Cometlake Chromeboxes if all you’re going to use is HDMI/USB-C audio. The paid drivers are only for the headphone jack/mic. And you can use a USB audio interface for that instead.

Thanks very much, wasn’t expecting mrchromebox on my issue, i appreciate alot that u made things such easy for us to convert an chromebox into an whole proper system, u are a true inspiration would love make projects like urs.
btw i figured it out and attached an cheap type c to aux jack to the type c port it’s working fine, no issues.
But the booting problem still persists can u tell me what can i do to make it faster lik it takes 3 to 4 minutes to show the rabbit icon, i have a asus chromebox 4 with i7 10th gen and 8 gb ram, it lik has pretty good specs but still slow boot issues.
I didn’t had such issues in my cn60 it used to work fine with intel celeron, had to admit cn60 is really something, no lags it used to work smooth even with windows 11.

that’s not normal, and I don’t see that on my 10th-gen i7 Chromebox here - it boots up in ~3s. Would need a cbmem timestamp log (-t) to see what’s going on

you can also get the cbmem log from Windows if you have coolstar’s EC drivers installed, the executable is in the crosec folder IIRC. run from command line.
