Device recommendation

Hello,

I’m looking for a Chromebook but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the choices. I’d like to replace my iPad with something a bit more flexible. Maybe the device I’m looking for doesn’t exist but one can hope

  • size: 10-13”
  • 2-in1 device or detachable keyboard
  • dual boot with Linux (not only Linux apps in ChromeOS)
  • ability to run Android apps

Thanks for any suggestions!

You will need to find a Chromebook which works with RW_LEGACY firmware, since that is the only way to dual boot ChromeOS and Linux. I don’t have any experience with a Chromebook with your criteria, besides Redrix, but I wouldn’t recommend Redrix as it doesn’t run Linux as well as other Chromebooks.

Sorry to necrobump this post, but might I suggest the ThinkPad C13 Yoga? It’s not only compatible with the RW_legacy firmware, can run Android apps and is a 2 in 1 device, it’s also a pretty good machine too if you use coreboot. I ordered mine on Amazon for $256 Canadian back in March, I’ve been daily driving it with Gentoo Linux installed and I do have to say, it’s a solid piece of kit. Just a word of advice though if you are looking for one, aside from the usual stuff of looking out for a good deal, since you shouldn’t be paying $700 for one, you should consider getting either the Ryzen 5 3500C model or the Ryzen 7 3700c model. Not only do they have more RAM and better processors than the base Athlon model, but the Athlon models don’t have an NVMe slot installed, so unless you’re handy with a soldering iron and are willing to put up with 4gbs of RAM, I’d stay away from the Athlon models. Another thing to keep in mind is that while M.2 2280 drives work and fit, double sided ones do not fit, so make sure the drive is a single sided model.
