Chromebook Firmware Reflash

I have a corrpted HP 11 G8 EE. I need to reflash the firmware, but i have no idea where to get the firmware from and what chip i need to flash ( i think its the soic8 chip but I’m not sure). Can someone please give me a little guideance on how i should approach this?

so clarify i need to use a chip flasher, as the chromebook wont boot anymore.

is the documentation not clear in this regard?

Clarification: go to mrchromebox.tech and unbrick your device by searching the appropriate section. ask ai if you don’t know what’s on the page

so ive read all the documentation, which does detial that i can “restore stock firmware” using either a backup or a recovery image. this would be amazing, but the chromebook will NOT turn on no matter what i do, so i need some kind of file to flash over to the chip with a flasher.

the documentation also details “manually flashing firmware”, which involves flashing it from a custom file. not only do i not have this file, but the computer does NOT boot at all, hence the need for a flasher.

is there somewhere to get the firmware? if not online, i do have access to other of the same chromebooks. if i were to make a backup on there and flash that backup, would it work? additionally, what chip specifically do i need to flash (i think its the soic8 but correct me if I’m wrong.

Have you checked: “Help and Support > Unbricking”? This unfortunately needs an external programmer, so do it at your own risk.

ah okay, thanks. i did not see that page before.

still, i dont really know which file i need to flash. i dont have a backup from the script, and i dont want the custom ones. will the shellball firmware return it to normal?

shellball images are not available anymore, it became too hard to maintain a current firmware image for the entire range of available devices.

you don’t have a backup? well, you should have made one, as the instructions told you, as the script strongly urged you to do.

if you want to go back to stock, the easiest way to do so is to reflash the UEFI firmware, boot Linux, run the script, and restore from a recovery USB.

or, you can download and use the coreboot crosfirmware script

to get a shellball ROM that way

hi,

i was not messing around with your script, so i never had the chance to make a backup. I’ll be sure to make one next time

i have access to another one of the same chromebook and ive ran “flashrom -p internal -r backup.rom” and got the 16mb file.

is this the file i need? can i safely flash it over?

if it’s the same HWID, you’ll be fine. flash only the BIOS region as per the unbricking instructions. You can’t flash the whole chip as the internal backup is not able to read the whole chip.

are the hwids device specific or model specific?

if not, cant i just change it back using the script?

if the first part of the HWID – the board name – is the same, then you’re good to go.

You can’t change it back if you don’t have the original, which you don’t because you don’t have a backup.
