Long story short, I’m helping someone install Linux on their Chromebook. It’s an Asus CX1500CNA Baby Tiger distro Chromebook. I’ve followed all the guides. I enabled dev mode, disconnected the battery to disable write protection, instilled the Mr. Chrome box legacy firmware, and flashed a usb with various Linux distributions.
After all of that, I am still having trouble installing the operating system. It boots into the live USB, but none of the installers worked. I’ve tried Gallium, Mint, Elementary, and more! The installers either crash or never load. Have I missed a step?
Extra Note:
I tried checking the logs for one of the installers. It mentioned an issue with the WiFi connection utility not containing some command. I saw a recommendation to disable the WiFi while installing, and still no luck.
What CPU does the computer have?
It has an Intel Celeron 1.10GHz. It also has 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM.
you mean the RW_LEGACY firmware?
Gallium has been dead for years. The others should work, but you’ve not provided anywhere near enough detail to help troubleshoot
Thanks! Try analyzing the code in the other OSs, and if you can’t or don’t want to, here’s one final solution. Arch Linux/Gentoo come preshipped with all the essential commands, but doesn’t have a desktop (it must be installed). Pop in a USB with the system, then find an install guide. Here’s one. A tech expert by the name of “Average Linux User” (stopped uploading a long time ago) has published many tutorials on how to install a desktop environment on both OSes. Try following the instructions. If you have an error somewhere, tell it here, and I might help. If it’s successful, install the audio drivers (if applicable) and I’m happy to help.
Yes. I do mean the legacy firmware. And what information do you need to help troubleshoot? I’ll find whatever I can.
Do you mean analyze the error logs? And I can try arch, but I’m willing to bet that it’ll have a similar error. The operating systems load from the USB, but refuse to install to the internal storage.
Try it out! You don’t know until you try.
I tried. Now it’s not booting any Linux distribution.
ChromeOS is fine. Everything functions. It just refuses to boot Linux. Would the UEFI Firmware work better instead? Is there some form of WP on the internal storage that’s separate from the battery connection?
I’m running out of ideas and resources.
There’s not much I can do to help you with this now, as MrChromeBox ain’t guaranteeing Linux will work. Although depends. Ask your friend whether he minds getting ChromeOS erased, then I might give you another solution.
He wants it completely replaced.
I don’t guarantee any OS support for any device
Understandably so. Definitive statements are the downfall of many.
