Summary of the Issue

i picked just UEFI during install didnt think about it tell later when i wanted to use linux that didnt use UEFI and now i am limited to UEFI linux only, anyway to re-setup the install to set both RW_LEGACY and UEFI?

i also lost the flash drive that had my backup chromeos or the save files it gives.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. i tried the install software again using live ubuntu no dice.

  2. i tried reinstall chromeos recovery no dice

Expected Behavior

i want both RW_LEGACY and UEFI

this doesn’t make any sense.

If you want to use the RW_LEGACY firmware, restore the stock firmware, the install RW_LEGACY.

I think I explained my issue badly in my original post, which is probably why it was confusing. Sorry about that.

I installed MrChromebox Full UEFI firmware on my ASUS Chromebook C425TA/LEONA about 2 years ago so I could install Windows 11. Windows still works fine just so many driver issues after current 2026 updates but thats not what this is about whole other thing for another time.

My misunderstanding was that I thought choosing Full UEFI instead of RW_LEGACY was why I was having trouble with some Linux distributions. I assumed RW_LEGACY would give me additional compatibility for Linux distros that don’t work with UEFI, and I thought I needed both installed somehow.

After looking into it more, I now realize that RW_LEGACY is mainly related to keeping the stock ChromeOS firmware and booting an alternate OS, rather than being a way to add general Linux compatibility to Full UEFI. So I may have been chasing the wrong problem.

My actual problem is: I’ve tried several Linux distributions, including Debian, and some fail with GRUB errors or UEFI-related errors. Since Windows 11 works, I’m trying to figure out whether the problem is:

  • My UEFI firmware being old/outdated

  • The way I’m creating the bootable USB

  • The specific Linux distro/version

  • A Secure Boot or bootloader issue

  • Something related to the Chromebook’s eMMC storage

  • Or something specific to the ASUS C425TA / LEONA

I also lost the USB/backup containing my original stock Chromebook firmware, so restoring ChromeOS may be more complicated.

So I guess my main question is not really “how do I install both RW_LEGACY and UEFI?” anymore.

What I really want to know is:

Should I keep the current Full UEFI firmware and troubleshoot/update it, or is there a reason I should restore stock firmware and use RW_LEGACY instead? The goal is to install other Linux distros without grub issues / install issues.

I can provide the exact GRUB/UEFI errors and details about which Linux distros and USB creation methods I used if that would help.
