Acer C-720P GBB flags issue with SEABIOS

To start this is my first post, and first Chromebook modification to Linux OS. I recently modified my Acer Chromebook C-720p “Peppy”. I followed the steps to place it in DevMode, and carefully followed the steps in Mr. Chromebox.tech with the bios script. Everything went well until I chose the wrong number in the menu. I wanted the #2 for UEFI Full Rom …. Instead I chose #3 by mistake? Well everything went ok, until I rebooted and the “Rabbit” core boot never showed up. Instead I’m being told that it is just a modified version of the Factory Chromebook Bios. It now shows up as SEABIOS and is really no choices on boot up? :face_with_symbols_on_mouth: So I continued on with the install of Gallium OS 3.1 Linux Distro. Now I cannot change my Linux Distro due to the fact that my xfce Terminal is not powerful enough to enter the Mr Chromebox.tech site and make the change necessary to complete the upgrade to EUFI Full ROM that I need to be able to load from a USB Drive. I’m very frustrated with all this mess, and there is nothing that can help me on YouTube. Like I said I’m very new to all this Linux Distro’s and have installed Linux Mint on my Desktop Computer without any problems. I like Mint and wanted to change my Acer Tablet to it, but I can’t seem to find any answers. Please Help

Also I have tried several ways to change the GBB flags on the SEABIOS…… but I am not good enough on the Terminal to understand all the ways to access, and change the GBB flags? This is like another confusing language to me. I’m currently reading as much as I can, and watching videos on YouTube. Nothing has helped me so far. Thanks  Oh by the way I’m 74 years old….. not easy.

I don’t understand why after selecting the wrong option from the script, you kept going. and going. and going. And then installed an OS from 7 years ago.

Regardless, you should be able to boot a current distro from USB via SeaBIOS-- you booted GalliumOS to install it, after all.

You can also just boot to ChromeOS recovery mode and restore ChromeOS and start over, using CTRL+D to boot ChromeOS vs SeaBIOS.

Well I was following a YouTube video to start out with. I was not aware the video was 7 years old. My mistake. None the less this was a mistake……. I can accept that, and Im 74 years old and just learning this new technology…… I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life……Oh well. After following the video and realizing something was not right, I tried to return it back to the original Chrome OS. Not understanding the procedure it did not work, so here I am. The end result is that the Chromebook will not return to the factory settings. All I get is a circular spinning sign of buffering, and a bit of information to go to Https://google.com/chromeos/recovery/ for answers to my problem. Well I could not get any answers to my issue……. So I decided to come here and seek some professional advice, and not be ridiculed. Obviously you are the Expert here so what can I do? When I go to the Gallium OS terminal and do the firmware script from Mr Chromebox.tech, it starts out ok, then stops and says that my xfce terminal is not powerful enough to perform the required operation. It keeps saying that I need a Ubuntu 24.04.4 terminal to perform the operation.(sorry I do not have the verbage exactly copied for you). So my question is….. how do I get a Ubuntu 24.4 terminal on my Acer Chromebook to perform this operation. Trust me I have tried everything suggested, and nothing works. This is something I do to take up my time in Retirement……a hobby. Funny thing is that this Acer Chromebook is not worth my time. But figuring out something likes this issue is what makes life so interesting. So if nothing can be done, at least I tried. Thank you for all your help. :+1:

booting to recovery mode (ESC+Refresh+power) will bring you to the ‘OS is missing/damaged’ screen. From there, you need to insert a USB with ChromeOS recovery media created on another device. the recovery mode link at the bottom of the screen tells you how to create the recovery media (using the ChromeOS/chromebook recovery extension is easiest).

the issue with running my script from GalliumOS has nothing to do with being ‘powerful enough’, it’s that GalliiumOS is so old, it can’t run one of the utilities that my script depends on. We could fix the problem manually, but it’s easier to do that in a real-time setting like Discord or IRC than back and forth via forum posts.

Mr Chromebox

Well I am very happy to announce the end to this issue. I was able to install UbuntuMate yesterday evening. Was able to use Mate Terminal to access the Mr Chromebox firmware script, and install the UEFI Full ROM firmware to the Acer Chromebook C-720P. Everything has ended in a happy note.

A Big Thank You Mr Chromebox for the technical expertise to complete all of this. Your site is awesome, and really makes a difference. :+1::trophy::united_states:
