Realistic expectations for KANO / Acer Chromebook Spin 714 2003 / CP714-2W-5612

updated kernel maybe

Please bear with me here - I was initially concerned that the special kernel installed by the audio fix would get over-written by the regular kernel when apt upgrading, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. uname -a is reporting a later version than the one I reported above, so perhaps the special kernel is itself getting updated by apt? If not, how would I get the latest kernel?

Oh I forgot you were using Debian. I’ve always used distros / Chromebooks that work with the default kernel that the distro comes with.

Well, it’s built at GitHub - chrultrabook/debian-kernel: CI for building custom kernels for debian. You could try modifying it to use a newer kernel and then build it (either on ur computer or GitHub actions).

Yes, it would be a lot easier to have a distro where the default kernel worked with my Chromebook, but how would I know?
Besides just trying a lot of them…

You can use distros which update frequently (not Debian / Ubuntu). Here are ones which I know will probably have the latest kernels:

  • Arch
  • Fedora
  • NixOS

There are probably many more that I don’t know about.

I’m terms of ease of use I’d recommend Fedora

Works for me running Debian (tigerlake & eldrid) Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried manjaro, which seems to be working better for me than debian. It’s a learning curve since I’m so used to using Debian or Debian-derivatives on all my other systems (like I keep typing apt commands), but I’m pleased with how well it works. No need for special kernels.

I got Bluefin (Fedora 39) installed on my KANO Acer Spin using RW_LEGACY firmware and mostly working fine.

The only issues I’ve found so far are:

  1. Audio (The standard fix did not work because of non-writable filesystem; issue to track in bluefin repo)
  2. DONE usb-c (fix worked fine)
  3. Camera, not recognized as present

The other items I’ve tested in t2m’s worked fine. I’m dual booting and this isn’t my primary computer so no rush to fix audio/camera. May try to updating to the F40 bluefin image to see if that magically fixes any of the remaining items.

EDIT: Still not working on F40
