eMMC Drive Not Found by Windows 10 Installer/Setup - Need Help

System Details

  • Device: Dell Chromebook 3100 2-in-1 | Gemini Lake Chipset | 8GB Ram Model
  • OS: Empty eMMC (This is where I want Windows 10), Ubuntu on External SSD + Pop OS on Flash Drive + Empty External SSD for Installation Files
  • Firmware Type: Full UEFI
  • Firmware Version: TBH Unknown - Likely the Latest
  • Internal storage type: [eMMC]
  • External storage type: [NVMe SSD]

Summary of the Issue

Please help - I am currently trying to install WIndows 10 onto my Dell Chromebook 3100 2-in-1. I have had full UEFI on it for about 6 months since I got it, been running Pop OS from a Flash Drive and Ubuntu from an external NVMe SSD, while my Internal eMMC is empty. My chromebook is the 8gb ram version and runs on a Gemini Lake board. Never had issues with this in the past on a 4gb ram dell chromebook 3100 (not the 2 in 1). From what I can tell this looks like it is a driver issue preventing Windows Setup to properly read and initialize the eMMC. This happens when I go to choose the device to install on and the eMMC simply does not show as if it doesn’t exist.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Dell 3100 2-in-1 Chromebook + Full UEFI

  2. Try to install Windows 10 from a USB Flash Drive or SSD

  3. eMMC does not show when asked to “Select where to install WIndows”

Expected Behavior

Windows 10 Setup should have worked as normal, allowing installation to the eMMC.

the UEFI firmware tells you the version and date on the home screen.

using an unofficial Windows ISO is not supported - you’re on your own if that’s what you’re doing.

edit: booting official Win11 installer on Ampton, eMMC is detected without issue

I am using the official WIndows 10 Installer/ISO. I will reboot now to check on that firmware version. Sounds like your saying though I should instead use a Windows 11 Official ISO/Installer correct?

I’m just saying what I tested works, so it’s not likely a firmware issue.

Is gemeni weak platform, i suggest install Win 10 ltsc.

LTSC doesn’t help if Win10 ISO doesn’t have eMMC drivers for GLK

In that case, then first add f6 drivers

and the drivers come from where?

From hp, acer, lenovo, etc, he can search in google with vendor & device id or from similar laptop with same chipset, but, in fact since long time i dont needed f6 drivers anymore.

I have tried that already, I downloaded probably every gemini lake driver there is out there and loaded them to a separate flash drive and selected “Load Drivers” when at the “Select where to install Windows screen”. I am trying to install win11 now thanks for the help, I will update with my results

I have just downloaded the official Windows 11 ISO directly from the Microsoft website, I have Ventoy installed on my Windows 11 Installer drive, so I am booting the ISO using Ventoy incase that gives more info, same issue as with the Windows 10 ISO, it finds all my drives except for the eMMC. Should I maybe format the eMMC to GPT+NTFS maybe will that help at all. I’m at a loss and I need Windows badly to run my company’s proprietary software which isn’t compatible with Wine.

Extra Notes: Firmware Version - MrChromebox-2603.2 05/17/2026

using Ventoy is NOT recommended, it’s not the same as writing the ISO directly to USB using MS tool or Rufus.

this has nothing to do with the eMMC drive partitioning or format. don’t waste your time there.

I’d also recommend booting a live USB and updating to the latest firmware; I don’t provide support for older versions

Sadly, I just wrote the ISO directly to the installer drive using Rufus Linux Replica (Github Source for Rufus Linux Replica). When I boot to the drive however (now not using ventoy, I am hit immediately with the “Install driver to show hardware” page, so it is unable to load any drivers for some reason, unless I use Ventoy then it atleast loads enough drivers to get to the point where it asks where you want to install just minus my eMMC. This is such a weird issue because I have been using your firmware on countless chromebooks over many years and never encountered this issue.

that’s because the ISO was not written properly, there’s a post every week on this. You cannot simply dd the ISO to the USB, you will get the ‘install driver’ pop-up every time.

The easiest way to not waste time on this is to verify the known working config: latest firmware and official Win11 ISO, written properly, not using Ventoy. if that’s not working, then you have a board or device specific issue.

is the eMMC listed under the edk2 boot menu?

I didn’t use dd to write the ISO I used a replica of Rufus and I do not believe it uses dd. Regardless I am trying to write it properly as you described using fdisk then next writing the iso to the drive using these commands, also yes the eMMC is listed in the edk2 boot menu and if the below process is still incorrect could you please advise me the proper way to write the Windows ISO to my install drive using Linux (Ubuntu) to write the iso to the install drive, your help is greatly appreciated:

sudo mkfs.vfat -F 32 -n BOOT /dev/sda1
sudo mkfs.ntfs --quick -L INSTALL /dev/sda2
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/bootusb
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/bootusb
sudo rsync -r --progress --exclude=‘sources’ /mnt/iso/ /mnt/bootusb/
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/bootusb/sources
sudo cp /mnt/iso/sources/boot.wim /mnt/bootusb/sources/
sudo umount /mnt/bootusb
sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/ntfs
sudo rsync -r --progress /mnt/iso/ /mnt/ntfs/
sudo umount /mnt/ntfs
sync

After writing to the install drive this way, I encounter the same issue, Select drivers to show hardware

woe2usb is the only way I know that works from Linux.
